Extreme weather, rising global temperatures, the systematic depletion of soil health, soaring emissions, biodiversity loss - as the 2021 IPCC Report stated unequivocally, intensive human behaviours have pushed the planet to breaking point.

Food systems account for 34% of all man-made greenhouse gas emissions. In the UK alone, industrial farms have increased in number by 203% since 1982. In the early 1980s, most US farms were smaller than 600 crop acres. Today that figure stands at at least 1, 100 acres, and many are between 5 and 10 times that size. Reliant on agrochemicals and controlled systems of irrigation, these super farms are not only damaging our planet, but the monocultures they produce are low in nutrition and flavour-poor.

How we farm and what we eat are at the core of the climate crisis, but they can also be part of the solution - one that you can have an active hand in.

Since 2004, we have laid down over £500k in small-scale farms, providing growers like Oli Baker and Francesco Tallarita with the funds to take on new land, diversify their crop planning and build long-lasting infrastructure without having to compromise on their values or growing practices.

Our Farm Fund takes that commitment to the next level, reinforcing the fight for a better food system. We are deploying targeted fundraising for agro-ecological farming projects and communities whose everyday work plays a vital role in restoring both planetary and human health.

There is hope in action - but it has to be collective and it has to be now. Donate to the Farm Fund - transform the future.

YOUNG FARMER GRANT
UK

The average age of a UK farmer is 59, with less than 3% aged under 35. Without action at ground level, change is impossible. Ushering young people into regenerative agriculture not only broadens skill sets and perspectives, it also creates rewarding, meaningful livelihoods for a generation more conscious than any that has come before them.

In offering a £3k, no-strings-attached grant and the support of our Sourcing, Brand and Education team to a promising young farmer, we’re aiming to provide a vital step up to those who would not otherwise be able to get a foot on the ladder.

Open to all farmers - would be or established - under the age of 35, whose vision for a better food system aligns with our own.

CÉCILE PARISE
Toulouse, France

Since childhood, Cécile has been obsessed with seeds, setting up her own trial and saving operation on whatever space she could claim on the small family farm. Until now, a lack of resources has held her back, limiting her immense potential to feed into the diversity of both her local ecosystem and our diets.

This grant will enable her to build a new tunnel and expand her chilli, pepper and aubergine programme and break out of her limited local network.

Apply for a grant

Our Farm Fund team looks over applications for grants on an individual basis. To apply, you must be an independent farmer (or cooperative), contributing to at least one of our outlined areas of concern with a clear target in mind. Any use of intervention is limited to a last resort, if at all.

At any one time, one third of all funds raised are available exclusively to underrepresented, BIPOC individuals and farming projects, creating access for growers previously held back by social or economic barriers and therefore building a more inclusive farming community.
