At the helm of the five-acre market garden, Great Fen Farm, is Anthony, a young Australian grower who lives on the land and cares for the crops from first light to harvest, together with his partner Marella.

What began as a bare, fertile field is now a dynamic market garden, thanks to a deep commitment to building something meaningful, one step at a time.

Since 2022, Anthony and Marella have been working the land using organic principles and a carefully curated crop plan that reflects both the season and the soil. Nearly three years on, they're heading into what promises to be a plentiful season ahead.

“When we started, it was just grass – around five acres of grass. We bought the tunnel and over six months, I built it alongside one of my mates from Cornwall, which was an adventure. That was one of the first things we did – setting up somewhere enclosed and warm for seedlings. We're also planning to build another smaller tunnel soon for propagation."

Anthony and Marella are helping to shape what will be more than just a productive piece of land. Great Fen is a place to rethink farming – to trial crops at small scale, build infrastructure slowly and intentionally, and create a hub for education and community action in the fight for a better food system.

“This is our best season yet, we’re doing more than ever before.”

The team has now planted around 80% of this season’s crops. Tunnels are full of colour: Heirloom Tomato varieties in shades of red, orange and purple, alongside Bunched Badger Flame Beetroot, Lettuces, Leeks and summer Cabbage.

“There’s a lot that goes into starting a farm from irrigation to infrastructure. This spring’s conditions have been good though, and we’ve just added a new cultivation kit that’s made a huge difference for scaling up.”

Anthony’s excitement is grounded in the details: “Carrots are one of my favourite crops. I’m really looking forward to them this year. We also trialled Red Cabbage Kalibos last season and it went really well. I’m excited to see what comes from that. And of course, all the Tomatoes.”

Anthony is one of seven pioneering growers working to bring real flavour back to British tomatoes through our UK Heirloom Tomato Trial. Our mixed box, which is available to order on the app, brings together 15 unique varieties selected for flavour, not yield. A living expression of diversity.

"Heirloom Tomatoes like these are rare to come by," says Anthony. "It always feels like such a treat when they start to ripen. A wonderful surprise and a proper slice of late summer."

As we speak, some of our team is heading down to help with weeding – a reflection of the hands-on commitment it takes to keep this farm moving, and a very small part of the quiet, everyday work that keeps it growing.

Stories

See all

We exist to fix the food system.

People are more cut off from the origins of their food than ever. This makes flavour, nutrition and farming practices that protect the planet, almost impossible to find.

By working directly with growers, we create a more sustainable way forward for farming. By giving everyone the tools to understand the power of our food choices, we empower everybody to become drivers of change.

Now is the time for action. Join the food system revolution.
