This is bio intensive growing at its peak. Last month we were with Chris, Helen and the team at Timbarra, their one acre farm in the Don Valley. 10 years ago, the couple — both scientists — started applying their expertise in botany and ecology to the land. On our visit, this is what we observed:

GROWING REGION

The plot is close to one main wine region — the Yarra Valley — where the soils, access to water and mild, Alpine climate are ideal for growth.

BIO INTENSIVE METHODS

Chris and Helen grow an incredibly diverse selection of vegetables, rapidly turning over their beds and planting a good deal of flowers to feed into the biodiversity of their farm. Cultivation is chemical free and they follow organic principles without opting for the certification. Instead, they invite chefs and customers to the farm to witness their growing first-hand.

SEED SAVING

Every year, Chris and Helen save seeds from their best performing
pumpkins, parsnips, carrots, leeks and various other crops. They
distribute these amongst other small growers in their networks in
Victoria. They also like to use @transitionfarm seeds bred locally for
performing well in organic and low input systems.

ON-SITE GERMINATION

When not direct-sowing seed, everything is germinated in greenhouses on-site. This gives Chris and Helen maximum control, and is central to their selected varieties thriving.

WE EXIST TO FIX THE FOOD SYSTEM.

People are more cut off from the origins of their food than ever. This makes flavor, nutrition and farming practices that protect the planet, almost impossible to find.

By working directly with growers, we create a more sustainable way forward for farming. By giving everyone the tools to understand the power of our food choices, we empower everybody to become drivers of change.

Now is the time for action. Join the food system revolution.
